Superdry plots 21 new store openings amid European expansion

British fashion retailer Superdry has unveiled plans to open 21 new stores across the UK and mainland Europe in 2026, signalling a renewed push into physical retail as part of its broader turnaround strategy.
Expansion strategy gains momentum
The company’s chief executive, Julian Dunkerton, confirmed that 15 of the planned openings will be located in the UK, with the remaining six earmarked for key European markets.
Among the confirmed international locations are Berlin in Germany and Utrecht in the Netherlands, highlighting a targeted approach to strengthening the brand’s footprint in high-potential urban centres.
The expansion builds on earlier indications that Superdry was prioritising growth in countries such as Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands once suitable retail sites became available.
A vote of confidence in physical retail
The move reflects a strategic commitment to brick-and-mortar retail at a time when many fashion brands are reassessing store portfolios. Superdry sees physical locations as central to brand building, customer engagement and supporting its omnichannel strategy.
This renewed investment follows a period of restructuring and cost-cutting aimed at stabilising the business after years of declining sales and operational challenges. The company returned to profitability in 2025, providing a stronger financial foundation for expansion.
Turnaround and brand repositioning
Founded in 2003, Superdry rose rapidly to prominence with its blend of vintage Americana and Japanese-inspired graphics, before facing a prolonged downturn in the late 2010s and early 2020s.
Under Dunkerton’s leadership, the company has been repositioning its brand identity moving toward a more refined, preppy aesthetic and streamlining operations. This transformation has included store closures, cost reductions and a renewed focus on core markets.
The planned store openings therefore represent not just expansion, but a key milestone in Superdry’s comeback efforts.
While challenges remain in the competitive fashion retail landscape, Superdry’s expansion signals growing confidence in its recovery trajectory. Industry observers will be watching closely to see whether the new stores can drive sustained growth and re-establish the brand’s presence across Europe.
